Reorganizing

"It is unlikely that we will deepen our relationship with God in a casual or haphazard manner. There will be a need for some intentional commitment and some reorganization in our own lives. But there is nothing that will enrich our lives more than a deeper and clearer perception of God's presence in the routine of daily living." William O Paulsell President, emeritus, of Lexington Theological Seminary

Being conformed to the image of Christ, in part, means to be able to hear the Father's voice throughout the everyday craziness of our lives. Jesus gives us a peek into what this looks like when he said, "By myself I can do nothing. I evaluate life only as I hear, and my evaluation is just for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me." We can learn to hear the Father's voice as Jesus did, but we may need to reorganize some things, as William Paulsell suggests above.

One discovery I've made is that the reorganization process does not necessarily need to add more things to an already busy (read religious) life. We simply need to learn to examine what we are doing and see whether it is helping us learn to distinguish the Father's voice from the many competing voices of our day. But learning to distinguish the voices does take 'intentional commitment' and won't happen 'in a casual or haphazard manner.'

It's still the beginning of the New Year, this is a great time to make that evaluation and create your rhythm of listening practices. We call this a rhythm of life. We dedicate our Winter Alone/Together Retreat to the process of reorganizing. This year we are hosting several different types and topical retreats. Click on the link below to see the list of retreats offered throughout the year, but I encourage you to seriously consider the first one coming February 20-22.

Spiritual formation is a process, a lifelong process. Every year, for the past fifteen years, I've taken a group through our spiritual formation curriculum called, A Pilgrim's Process. If you are curious about what the process of spiritual formation looks like I would encourage you to read what we offer through this course by going to the link further down the page. As Paulsell's says at the top of this little post, 'There is nothing that will enrich our lives more than a deeper and clearer perception of God's presence in the routine of daily living.'
